Help Me Be Thin

“Help me be thin” was a frequently heard request at my Hypnosis office. The problem most people who want to be thin have is that they keep going on diets! Diets will not make you thin.

In fact, as you have probably already found out, continually trying different diets ends up with you putting on more weight than before and feeling very discouraged.

It does not have to be like this. The real help you need to be thin is to change your relationship with food, not a new diet. Most people know what they need to do to lose weight:

  • Eat less,
  • Eat healthy foods, and
  • Do a little exercise.

But it seems so hard to follow this simple but effective advice for life!

The real solution is to change your relationship with food, not go on another diet. When people:

  • Take smaller portions,
  • Make wiser food choices more of the time, and
  • Stop eating when they are not truly hungry

they start to lose weight easily and effortlessly. Add in some light exercise and they then have a powerful, practical and easy solution to reaching and staying at their desired weight.

Poor Eating Habits

So why don't more people do just this? For several reasons.

  • We often have formed bad eating habits. Typically overweight people eat quickly so by the time they receive the “I am full” message from their stomach it is already to late; they have eaten too much.
  • We eat the wrong kind of foods and drinks. It feels like we “must” have them.

  • People eat all the time for reasons other than being hungry. They eat because it is lunch time, they eat in order to prevent themselves from becoming hungry, and lastly, and this is a big one,
  • Overweight people eat to distract themselves away from feelings they do not like. This could be stress, anger, loneliness, whatever. Food has become the cheapest, most socially acceptable and legal drug in our society. We use it to celebrate good things and console ourselves from life's upsets.

The Answer to Help Me Be Thin

Until we relate to food primarily for what it really is, fuel for our body, we are condemned to being overweight for life and suffer all the physical and emotional problems being overweight brings.

It's like putting gas in your car. You would not try to overfill your gas tank. It would be a waste and would damage your car. But that is what you've been doing if you are overweight. Eating more, and may be poor quality, fuel than your body wants or needs. And you are hurting yourself as a consequence.

But even knowing this and just resolving to change the way you relate to food rarely works in the long run. That is because the problem rests with the habits and beliefs you have developed about food, probably since you where very young. And habits and beliefs are created and stored in your subconscious mind, not your logical, conscious mind.
