Sofana, can you first introduce yourself a little bit to our readers please.

My name is Sofana Kassam and I have been practicing hypnotherapy full time for about 12 years.  I left the corporate world and found a sense of purpose when I immersed myself in this field.

I am very passionate about the work that I do. To make a positive difference in a person's life, and to have everyone understand that it is possible to overcome limiting beliefs and be fulfilled in every area of your life. Change your thoughts and you literally change your life.

I have 3 office locations they are in Brampton, Toronto, and Mississauga. I meet the clients at the location that is most convenient for them.

What attracted you to a career in Hypnosis?

Hypnosis has been a part of my life since childhood. It all began with my father who believed in the power of the mind and the power of suggestion.

He was an avid reader and had an extensive collection of books on this subject matter. He practiced self hypnosis daily. When I was about 12 years old my father told me that everyone is capable of greatness and we can all be masters of our destiny. He realized the concept at that time that you create your reality through your thoughts.

I was intrigued and my search in this field of the mind was set in motion and has never stopped. My learning is ongoing there is no limit to the intellect that is the gift to humankind.

Have you experienced any personal benefits from using hypnosis for yourself that you would care to share with our readers?

Most definitely! Hypnosis has always been and continues to be a part of my life. The first time I used hypnosis for myself was when I was rushing and slipped down the stairs. I ended at the bottom step with a broken foot. The doctor placed my leg in a cast and gave me a pair of crutches.

However, I had previously signed up for a 5k run for Charity which was to take place in 3 weeks and was determined to make it for this run. I told him and he said it would be impossible since it would take 6 weeks to heal.

I am not sure if it was sheer determination and also to prove this doctor wrong but using self hypnosis I healed my foot in less than 3 weeks and ran the 5k.

I realized then that you can have your body respond to your thoughts. Think that you are getting better and you do!

What was the most helpful training you experienced to become a hypnotist?

The most helpful training that I received was the training and certification I received through the National Guild of Hypnotists to use hypnosis to treat cancer patients.

Following that I received certification through the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association. I was able to practice as a clinical hypnotherapist. It was after this that I began to get referrals from doctors as well.

What issues do your clients typically come to you for help with. Do you specialize in helping people with certain issues?

When patients/clients come to see me they have had an issue they would like to overcome that has been bothering them for some time. The most common are fears, stress and anxiety, depression, addictions, weight loss, or to increase their self confidence.

Most are not happy with where they are at present, and need help to move forward in a more positive direction in life. Hypnotherapy can help with an issue no matter what it is.

However, I do specialize in four major areas; Quitting Smoking, Weight loss, Stress Release and assisting clients Overcome Cancer and other major illnesses. I offer more information on this on my website www.modernhypnosis.ca

If a client would like to quit smoking with hypnosis, the desire has to be very strong. If so, a client can quit smoking in one session. I have the highest success rate in this area.

I always believe that you can guide your thoughts to heal your body no matter  the condition. Your body is a highly intricate intelligent system and is renewing itself continuously. It knows what to do, and how to heal itself.

Once you start focusing on being well and putting your attention to that thought, your body responds and balance gradually begins to ensue. It is a gentle process but one that is guided towards wellness. I would like to mention that everyone is able to heal their body through a positive intention to get better.

Do you find any particular phase of your hypnosis work to be of special interest to you?

I feel that change is most effective when I see a client one on one. Although I do offer group workshops, it is in the individual sessions where I give my undivided attention to the client. To listen to what the client has to say and what it is that he/she wants at that moment. Once they are in trance the positive suggestions and words just flow naturally. It becomes very personal for each one, each time.

What is the most frequent misunderstanding about hypnosis that you encounter with clients or the public?

Most clients have a concept that hypnosis is a form of mind control. I always take the time in the beginning of the session with new clients to explain what hypnosis is and what is going to take place. That this is an opportunity for them to use more of their minds to achieve whatever it is that they want.

As we both know, Hypnosis as a healing and helping modality has existed for hundreds of years now. However, it is more widely known and accepted in some areas than in others. How would you rate the public acceptance of hypnosis/hypnotherapy in your region?

I noticed that hypnosis/hypnotherapy is becoming more readily accepted here in Ontario. However, it still seems to be the last resort when everything else has not worked for a client. That is, they have tried other ways to overcome a certain condition and there has been minimal change.

I do wish that more medical doctors can be more open to having hypnotherapy used in conjunction with medicine. Together it can have a very positive effect on our health. We would spend less time in medical facilities and quicken our recovery. After all, healing first begins in the mind.

What would your favourite book on hypnosis be that you would recommend to others?

Hypnotherapy by Dave Elman is still my favourite. He did work with doctors and has been an inspiration for me. I have read this book several times and have also practiced some of his techniques.

Is there anything else that you would like to add that we have not yet covered?

I would like to say that we all have the ability to be or do or have anything we want through the power of our thoughts. Thoughts are states of energy and information.

Over time thoughts manifest as part of our reality. Negative emotions that are harboured in the body manifest as pain or other physical ailments. It would be helpful to let go of negative emotions as much as possible and seek a more positive approach. Hypnotherapy is most effective in this way.

We have the gift of choice.

So choose what will make you feel better in the moment and let that feeling guide you to change.

Wise words indeed.  Thank you Sofana, it has been a pleasure to meet you and learn about your hypnosis work in Brampton and your other two offices.
